The Power of ‘Viveka’

Image
On July 4th, 1902, at 39, Swami Vivekananda departed from this world, leaving a wealth of wisdom behind. As we mark the 122nd anniversary of his passing, I, as a reader and follower of his teachings, would like to illuminate the essence of one of his central philosophies - 'Viveka.' What is 'Viveka'? 'Viveka' essentially conveys the idea of differentiation through analysis, rooted in Sanskrit. The verb form 'Vivechana' conveys viveka in action. This word encapsulates the profound ideologies of Swami Vivekananda and provides a foundation for a fulfilling life in all its dimensions. Applying 'Viveka' in Modern Life It is crucial to define our concept of 'Viveka' and steadfastly uphold it in all aspects of life. While we've been taught right from childhood, it's essential to redefine these concepts based on our own experiences when navigating today's world. Whether it's ideas, thoughts, actions, speech, hard work, or intentio...

"The Blissful realm of consciousness: Exploring Yog Nidra"

Image
How well did you sleep last night? I will take the answer as ’ well’ The data on sleep irregularities and deprivations and their hazardous side effect- according to a study done in 2023, Overall, 88% of men and 94.5% of women had Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores of ≥5 and a mean PSQI score of 9.2 ± 3. Students with severe or extreme depression scores, with severe or extreme stress scores made me think that sleep is an important factor in survival. You might have encountered those dangerous and provoking experiments on human brains when sleep-deprived. according to the fifth volume of the Rasajalanidhi (chapter 23). Accordingly, “In sleep (nidra), the fatigue of the mind is followed by the fatigue of the sense-organs and their consequent withdrawal from the objective world”. That answers how important the quality of sleep is.  The concept of Yog Nidra refers to the practice of achieving a state between sleep and wakefulness, also known as light sleep. This concep...

Wonders around me part 18 - ‘The Rebels.’

Image
Do you know about the strongest force on earth? I’ll tell you. This force comes from the urge to do something when you're told by someone NOT to do it—or even the desire to do nothing when you're told to do something. This is the mightiest force on earth. This is probably how the greatest events and discoveries on our planet took place! Today, let us appreciate a very powerful component of society: the rebels. They are probably the ones who make things work for themselves or make others make it work! When I look around, the most obvious kind of rebels I see are some of those tiny human beings. You tell them not to eat the dirt they will proudly lick the floor before you. Well, it's tolerable though. Curiosity is born this way. Next come a slightly intermediate class- The teenage Rebels. Every one of us might have experienced this. Well, in this class they have 2 agendas: 1. They want to oppose the world no matter what. 2. Make the others feel guilty about their weakness and...

" लघु जयानां महाशक्तिः: सौम्यं च चेतनायत्तत्वम्" – The great power of small victories: their gentle force uplifts the spirit.   Namo namhah Mitrani! Do you remember the first time you took steps and heard those words of praise from your parents? किम् त्वं विस्मरयसि यदा त्वं तव जीवने प्रथम वारम् चलितुं प्रयत्न अकरोत् तदा माता पिता तव प्रशंसा अकुरुतम् ? Do you remember the first time you tried to speak,  the motivation everyone around you gave you? And even after the mere lemon spoon race at your kindergarten? Human brain seeks validation to record and decide the intensity of its involvement. If someone praises us, we tend to move in same direction but with greater intensity. It is so important to validate small achivements to make one able and charge up for greater victory! मानवमस्तिष्क...

Adwit part 1- ‘प्रकृति’ आत्म- बोधन दात्री।।

Hello everyone! In the very first part of this unique series, I've come up with a light concept, which yet, sinks deeper into the ocean of knowledge! Prakruti usually means nature. Which we see, experience and what surrounds the world. Similarly, what surrounds, supports our inner human world, and brings about all the phenomena is Prakruti. Ayurvedic texts mention this concept to know how a person is metabolically, mentally, socially and spiritually. Once you know the science of why someone is very slow while others are always in a hurry maybe, things will not irritate you unnecessarily. So, here's the concept of Prakriti with a bit of my philosophical interpretation of it for you, my way! SELF-AWARENESS AND AWARENESS OF HOW THINGS WORK, IS THE ULTIMATE GATEWAY! Prakriti iti swabhavam" as told by acharya charaka. Swa-self, bhava- Approach. In ayurved, the concept of 'Prakriti' is emphasized as one's nature. Mental as well as physical more precisely the metaboli...

'अद्वित'- Introduction

Sanskrit is not the language of only religion and prayer books, but of every subject known to man. And Sanskrit is most definitely not just the language of Hindus — it is taught in schools all over the world today irrespective of caste, creed or religion. My passion for sanskrit being a student of sanskrit since 8 years now, I was obligated to bring about something in my own way to flourish the divine language, for the audience and myself as a writer. Sanskrit is the most scientific and fulfilling language amongst the linguistics across globe, infact, Sanskrit is considered as mother language for those. Through the course of this series I will humbly try to make your friendship with the language and bring more scientific aspects of the language and its benefits for your mind. We shall explore shlokas and their effects, poems, phrases, articles and philosophies and practical applicability of ancient text philosophies in our everyday life. Again, an attempt to make your life ext...

‘The Neuroscientific Nexus of Meditation, Lucid Dreaming, and Everyday Life’-pt2-Exploring the realms of neuroscience my way.

Image
Do you become aware amidst dreaming that you are dreaming? Do you wonder why the brain works so miraculously and what shall we gain by knowing the magical science behind this mere-sounding concept? Hello there! I am back with another exploration of neuroscience, my way. It happens sometimes that you are asleep, and only after a while you somehow become aware that you are dreaming. This phenomenon in science is called ‘ Lucid Dreaming’. Lucid dreams are associated with increased physiological activation, as measured by increased phasic activity (e.g., increased REM density). Autonomic nervous system arousal (e.g., heart rate, respiration rate, takes place due to ongoing thought processes and undelated impulses in our brain which ultimately come from stress, anxiety, overthinking even recalling memories! Lucid dreaming thus provides a way to establish precise psychophysiological correlations between the contents of consciousness during sleep and physiological measures, as well as en...
