The Power of ‘Viveka’

On July 4th, 1902, at 39, Swami Vivekananda departed from this world, leaving a wealth of wisdom behind. As we mark the 122nd anniversary of his passing, I, as a reader and follower of his teachings, would like to illuminate the essence of one of his central philosophies - 'Viveka.'

What is 'Viveka'?

'Viveka' essentially conveys the idea of differentiation through analysis, rooted in Sanskrit. The verb form 'Vivechana' conveys viveka in action. This word encapsulates the profound ideologies of Swami Vivekananda and provides a foundation for a fulfilling life in all its dimensions.

Applying 'Viveka' in Modern Life

It is crucial to define our concept of 'Viveka' and steadfastly uphold it in all aspects of life. While we've been taught right from childhood, it's essential to redefine these concepts based on our own experiences when navigating today's world. Whether it's ideas, thoughts, actions, speech, hard work, or intentions, we need to approach them with 'Viveka.' The true essence of life lies in our ability to analyze and make decisions based on what is good and bad. Tough times require wisdom and preparation.

Embracing 'Viveka' doesn't mean sacrificing fun and enjoyment; it means making thoughtful choices instead of blindly following. In today's culture dominated by social media, it is crucial to discern what is truly worth following and what is not. People often adopt ideologies promoted on social media, but we must recognize that not everything displayed is essential. It is unnecessary to treat people as they are portrayed on social media. People are simple, but social media introduces unnecessary complexities.

We should establish boundaries to prevent social media content from influencing our way of life. Keep in mind that the ideas we embrace and the individuals we listen to shape our thoughts and lifestyles. Thoughtfulness will enable us to prioritize and discern the value, utility, and loveworthiness of particular things, actions, or experiences.

Developing 'Viveka'

How can we develop 'Viveka'? By asking ourselves questions before speaking, acting, expressing, or forming an ideology - Is it adding value to me? If not to me, is it helpful to people around me? Is it kind? Is it necessary? These are the fundamental questions. The beauty of this concept is that you can ask questions that you believe are right and adapt accordingly. Shape the way you live.

Application of 'Viveka'

As I mentioned earlier, you must apply 'Viveka' in every walk of life. The habit of this way of thinking can earn you great results, whether it be in studying, researching, understanding people, dealing with problems, or working in the public and private sectors. It is especially important for healthcare professionals and everyone on this planet. It shall keep you in the right composure at all times. This is very important when you portray a personality in society. Youth must look at it as a mantra for achieving the purpose of life.

The Impact of 'Viveka'

It's amazing how ‘Viveka’ can expand through the way you speak or treat people, the rules you follow, and the thoughts you radiate, which we can call vibes. Ultimately, these are the determining factors for your growth and the growth of the people in your proximity. Indeed, this golden concept given by Swami Vivekananda is a must to inculcate as a developing youth. So, make your concept of ‘Viveka’ and lead a life of much quality, growth, compassion, peace, and identity!

Conclusion

To conclude, don’t worry much about life - just experience and relish it with a sense of ‘Viveka’. Remember what Swami Vivekananda firmly quotes: “उध्दरेदात्मनात्मानम्” - Enhance yourself by yourself!
